Effects of short-term hypoxia on metabolism and haemocyanin oxygen transport in the prawns Palaemon adspersus and Palaemonetes varians

چکیده
In summer, high temperatures are combined w ~ t h severe nocturnal hypoxia In the shallow water of Danish fjords. Under these conditions, the prawns Palaemonetes varians (Leach) and Palaem o n adspersus (Rathke) are spatially separated, with the former occupying the areas of highest temperature and lowest oxygen tension. If kept together, P, adspersus shows aggressive behavlour towards P varians. Aerobic/anaerobic respiration and haemocyanin characteristics were measured in laboratory experiments (24°C. 14 ppt). Although the 2 species have similar metabolic rates, P. varians survives severe hypoxia better and has a lower P, (critical oxygen tension, below which respiration is partly or fully anaerobic) than P adspersus. Both species accumulate high levels of lactate during anaerobiosis and remove it at similar rates. The haemocyanin concentration and total oxygen carrying capacity (0.78 2 0.25 mm01 I-' and 2.25 + 0.56 ~ 0 1 % ) of P varians was higher than P. adspersus (0.28 rt 0.07 mm01 I-' and 1.14 + 0.15 vol%). Haemocyanin oxygen affin~ty was always higher in P. vanans regardless of pH, but tile B u i i ~ idctor i-i.44 and i . 4 6 ) and cooperat~vity (nS0. 2 61 + 0.20 and 2.82 t 0.49) were similar for P. varians and P. adspersus, respectively. P. varians is thus better adapted to severe hypoxia than P. adspersus

Effects of cyclic hypoxia on gene expression and reproduction in a grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio.
Cyclic changes in dissolved oxygen occur naturally in shallow estuarine systems, yet little is known about the adaptations and responses of estuarine organisms to cyclic hypoxia. Here we examine the responses of Palaemonetes pugio, a species of grass shrimp, to cyclic hypoxia (1.5-8 mg/l dissolved oxygen; 4.20-22.42 kPa) at both the molecular and organismal levels. We measured alterations in ge...
متن کاملPressure tolerance of the shallow-water caridean shrimp Palaemonetes varians across its thermal tolerance window.
To date, no published study has assessed the full physiological scope of a marine invertebrate species with respect to both temperature and hydrostatic pressure. In this study, adult specimens of the shallow-water shrimp species Palaemonetes varians were subjected to a temperature/pressure regime from 5 to 30°C and from 0.1 to 30 MPa. The rate of oxygen consumption and behaviour in response to ...
متن کاملHypoxic effects on growth of Palaemonetes vulgaris larvae and other species: Using constant exposure data to estimate cyclic exposure response.
First stage larval marsh grass shrimp, Palaemonetes vulgaris, were exposed to patterns of diurnal, semidiurnal, and constant hypoxia to evaluate effects on growth and to determine if there was a consistent relationship between exposures. A comparison of growth with cyclic exposures versus constant low dissolved oxygen (D.O.) concentrations equivalent to the minima of the cycles showed the cycli...
متن کاملThe potential for climate-driven bathymetric range shifts: sustained temperature and pressure exposures on a marine ectotherm, Palaemonetes varians
Range shifts are of great importance as a response for species facing climate change. In the light of current ocean-surface warming, many studies have focused on the capacity of marine ectotherms to shift their ranges latitudinally. Bathymetric range shifts offer an important alternative, and may be the sole option for species already at high latitudes or those within enclosed seas; yet relevan...
متن کاملThe Implications of Temperature-Mediated Plasticity in Larval Instar Number for Development within a Marine Invertebrate, the Shrimp Palaemonetes varians
Variations in larval instar number are common among arthropods. Here, we assess the implications of temperature-mediated variations in larval instar number for larval development time, larval growth rates, and juvenile dry weight within the palaemonid shrimp, Palaemonetes varians. In contrast with previous literature, which focuses on terrestrial arthropods, particularly model and pest species ...
